Bowen Therapy originated from Australia in the 1950s and was created by Tom Bowen. It involves gentle rolling movements over muscles, tendons and ligaments. Bowen Therapy prides itself on being able to trigger the body's own healing systems. The technique is very subtle and light, using fingers and thumbs over various parts of the body, and doesn’t involve any hard or prolonged pressure.
The Bowen technique is a drug-free, non-invasive, therapy which can be administered through light clothing, with the client sitting, standing or lying. It stimulates the body to realign, addressing imbalances in functions and chemical composition thereby restoring physiological equilibrium. Bowen can help with a wide range of conditions, including physical and emotional, and is suitable for all ages, from new-born babies to the elderly.
Bowen can help with the following problems:
• Muscular, skeletal problems in the neck, shoulder and back
• RSI (repetitive strain injury), frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome
• Problems with posture and body alignment
• Back pain and sciatica
• Migraine
• Hay fever and asthma
• Digestive conditions such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)
• Arthritis
• Symptoms of the menopause
During each session, the therapist takes two-minute pauses allowing the client’s body to rest. The pauses are crucial elements that make up the Bowen technique; they allow the body to produce an appropriate response to the stimulation that they are receiving. Sessions last between 45 minutes and an hour and an initial set of three sessions is usually recommended.
Bowen can help to alleviate the symptoms of the menopause and help the body to adjust to the changes in hormone levels. Bowen has been used to treat hot flushes which can cause high levels of discomfort for women who are experiencing the menopause. Enys Evans, Bowen therapist and member of Bowen Therapy Professional Association (BTPA) has treated clients for menopause, who have provided testimonials:
"I started having Bowen sessions more than twelve months ago to try and alleviate the hot flushes which I was having several times during the day and night. It only took two treatments for them to disappear completely. Having a regular Bowen treatment keeps my hot flushes at bay and I'm able to get a proper night's sleep now. I find one treatment a month with Enys is all it takes."
